Not Planning on Retiring Anytime Soon Though.
Ellen Pompeo hasn't given much credence to continuing on with her acting career after an 11-year run on "Grey's Anatomy" comes to an end. Once the show comes to its conclusion Pompeo says she is ready to hang up her career in the field and move onward.
“I definitely don’t have a strong desire to act after ‘Grey’s [Anatomy],’” said the 44-year-old actress at Wednesday’s Buzzfeed Brews event. “I definitely feel myself transitioning. I don’t find acting terribly empowering. For the place I am in my life, I think my age, once I hit 40, I feel differently. I don’t necessarily want to work for other people.”
She continued, “I mean, never say never, I’m not going to come out and make one of those statements like, ‘I’m retiring after’ and then in February come back. I try to keep an open heart, an open mind, an open soul and spirit to whatever comes my way and whatever is meant to be for me will be.”
Pompeo mentioned that she has a desire to sit behind the scenes of TV as a producer or in some other aspect that would keep her in the business. Even though the hit TV show has a loyal fan base and a long-running history since 2005, the show has received multiple nominations over the years with few wins to account for over all.
She added, “I feel like the acting has been a wonderful opportunity and I’ve done so much of it over the last 11 years. Maybe part of my personality is that I feel like I have something to prove sometimes and with acting I don’t feel like I have anything to prove anymore. Even though I don’t have no awards or Emmys or anything like that.”
Pompeo has at least two more years of acting left to complete, which is good news for fans of 'Grey's.' Co-star Patrick Dempsey, who plays her on-screen husband has signed on with Pompeo to do the upcoming 12th season along with a planned 13th season.

"I mean, never say never," Pompeo said of her future in acting. "I'm not going to come out and make one of those statements like, 'I'm retiring after' and then in February come back. I try to keep an open heart, an open mind, an open soul and spirit to whatever comes my way, and whatever is meant to be for me will be."
