Cosby was Inspired by His Grandfather
According to Parade, Cosby was first exposed to comedy by his grandfather, Samuel Russell Cosby. His grandfather worked at a factory in Philadelphia and so he used to read biblical stories to Cosby during his free time. His Motivation to Learn Came from His Mom
Cosby's mother, Anna Cosby, had the privilege to be among the few black girls that were admitted at Philadelphia Girls' High. The school used to admit white girls in large numbers and so Anna must have been a performer to have secured her place in the institution. Her ambition was to become a teacher after completing education.
However, her dream did not come true because she had to quit in order to assist her siblings. She managed to get a job as a house-help. She actually remained in that position for 40 years. It's this determination and hard work that motivated Cosby to pursue further education perhaps to compensate for what his mom missed. From there onwards, Cosby has been campaigning for education which entails encouraging kids to study through his children TV shows.
Cosby was not a Performer in Class but was Talented in Music

As a young person, he dreamed of becoming a jazz drummer or an athlete. In fact, he went ahead to become a member of musicians union that hooked him up with a professional jazz combo. Though Cosby diverted to comedy, he did not abandon his love for jazz. In fact, he integrated it with his storytelling performances.

Besides that, there were a couple of advertisers who were not ready to accept him just because he was black. But as fate would have it, his co-star, Robert Culp, came to his rescue. Robert stated clearly that there was no way he would continue to be in the set while Cosby was absent. In his bid to convince the executives to let Cosby stay, he wrote some scripts for Cosby and and gave him acting lessons.
Though Cosby Almost Lost All His Money, His Wealth Has Been Dedicated to Show Dogs and African-American Art
Cosby had ventured into production somewhere in the 60s. However, the venture was not profitable because by late 60s, it's only $50,000 that stood between him and poverty. But due to his creativity, he was able recover from the risk of being broke by performing in Las Vegas in 70s. He also managed to get advertising gigs and used the proceeds to fund the training of many Lakeland terriers and Schnauzers that later became show dogs.
Ennis has a Special Place in His Heart and Career
Unlike many parents who want to forget their children once they die, Cosby has maintained a strong bond with his late son, Ennis. His son was killed back in 1997 at the age of 27. His remains were laid to rest in his father's estate in Northwest Massachusetts. Though it's been 17 years since his son died, Cosby still has all of Ennis's pictures including some paintings at his home.
