After a 90 Minute Wait an Angry Audience Takes to Social Media to Complain.
Singer Lauryn Hill's tour started over the weekend on Saturday to a sell-out crowd who had highly anticipated her performance at the beginning of the show.
The show was billed as a rare treat for fans of the singer, who was released less than a year again from federal prison where she served three months for tax evasion.
The 39-year-old singer was scheduled to perform for the crowd at 9pm with doors opening to ticket holders at 7pm. The former Fugee's singer ended up being almost an hour and a half late to the show at the O2 Brixton Academy, which led fans to become disgruntled over the absence of the singer to show up on time.
Management of the 4,900-seater venue took to Twitter a few minutes before her arrival to apologize to disgruntled fans, some of whom had started booing before her arrival.
"We apologize for the delay which is out of our control," read a statement on Twitter. "Lauryn Hill will be on stage very soon."
This came after angry fans begain to start taking their frustration out on social media over the long delay in the show. One audience member Tweeted, “At #LaurynHill concert in #London & she's now 1hr late from 830pm start time. Brixton Academy closes at 11pm. HMM...”
The show began to spiral out of control even before she arrived for her performance due to the warm up act, DJ Tieks, who asked the crowd if any of them had traveled to see it from the West Coast of America.
“I paid £50 a ticket for a DJ that asked which part of USA the audience were from (we're in London) & an hour (or less) set from #LaurynHill” tweeted one disgruntled fan. Whilst another posted, “Lauryn Hill is the most disappointing concert I have ever been to. That's heartbreaking.”
After Hill arrived and started her singing act on stage, fans were subject to a series of songs that were remixed and barely recognizable from her original pieces. This led fans to start booing the act, and eventually part of the crowd started leaving out the doors in disgust.
After the show, a number of fans took to Twitter to complain.
Yuichi Miyama, a 31-year-old paralegal from London, said on Twitter: "Lauryn Hill is the most disappointing concert I have ever been to. That's heart-breaking.”
He explained to Reuters at the concert that he didn’t recognize a lot of the songs Hill performed.
"The bottom line is Lauryn Hill is a singer and there are a lot of songs on that album that she sings certain things in such a beautiful way," he said.
"And I felt I didn't catch any of it in anything she sang. And a lot of the songs were so far away from the original."
