Samsung develops Wi-Fi 802.11ad standard with speeds of up to 4.6Gbps

The company explains why commercializing the standard was a bit of an issue

Wi-Fi 802.11ac has started to gain some pace now but Samsung has everything mapped out for the future and they have announced that the Wi-Fi 802.11ad standard development has been completed. The company is ready to commercialize their latest development in the connectivity department.

This new Wi-Fi 802.11ad standard is going to operate at a frequency of 60GHz and this generates higher transmission speeds of up to 4.6Gbps which equals 575MB/s. this shows an increase of five times as compared to the 802.11ac standard which runs at 866Mbps, or 108MB/s. According to Samsung 802.11ad standard maintains maximum speed by eliminating the co-channel interface and this leads to the removal of the gap between theoretical and actual speeds. The 60GHz frequency is more than 10 times faster than that of 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi standards. However, commercializing this standard became a bit of an issue for the company and the reason for that has been explained in a statement;

Until now, there have been significant challenges in commercially adopting 60GHz Wi-Fi technology , as millimeter waves that travel by line-of-sight has weak penetration properties and is susceptible to path loss, resulting in poor signal and data performance. By leveraging millimeter-wave circuit design and high performance modem technologies and by developing wide-coverage beam-forming antenna, Samsung was able to successfully achieve the highest quality, commercially viable 60GHz Wi-Fi technology.

Kim Chang Yong, Head of DMC R&D Center of Samsung Electronics said “Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology. New and innovative changes await Samsung’s next-generation devices, while new possibilities have been opened up for the future development of Wi-Fi technology.”
