Mike Babcock Confirms He Has Not Bargained For Contract Extension With Red Wings

Detroit Red Wings coach, Mike Babcock has come out strongly to set the record straight about rumors on his contract extension. The coach announced on the team's website that there were no such discussions between himself and the Red Wings management.

Babcock agreed that he had in deed met with the team's general manager, Ken Holland on several occasions before the beginning of this year but did not touch on the issue of his contract. In fact the coach stated that there was mutual agreement between him and the manager not to allow contract matters to interrupt their mission

“I don’t even know what imminent means,” Babcock joked, after Thursday’s practice session at Joe Louis Arena.

“Guys that’s like a fantasy world,” Babcock said. “(General manager) Ken Holland and I when we talked before the year, we agreed we wouldn’t do this during the year. Our team is going good. Our team is playing good. I like the way we’re playing. We don’t need any distractions.

Babcock argued that he was not under pressure to leave Red Wings because they appreciate him for the contributions he has made to the performance of the team. The coach said he was short of words because the situation has always been a win-win for all the parties and that is what matters the most.

“That’s what we decided,” Babcock said. “But like I said, I’m with Ken all the time. We can talk all the time, we haven’t about this, period. It’s not like I’m knocking on his office door. We’re fine. He likes winning and I like winning. We’re both happy.”

“I’m happy here. I like the general manager. They treat me good. I don’t know what else I can tell you, but as far as negotiations between Mike Babcock and Ken Holland there is none.”

Various media houses had reportedly posted that a deal that would see more years being added into the contract of Babcock was being made. Such news would be music to the ears of Red Wings Fans. This is because the team has recorded the best performance during his tenure. They have actually been contesting for Stanley's Finals every year. The coach is in deed a performer. He actually helped Canada to scoop two gold medals in the Olympic games.

Since Babcock is hardly available, reporters had to flood the locker room in one of those days that he is not busy just to get word from the horse's mouth. First and foremost, he hit back at them for publishing news that have not been verified. He also maintained that there were no contract negotiations as alleged.

“They can write whatever they want," he said. "You guys get paid to make stuff up I guess. But the facts? There’s got to be something to do with the facts in the media somewhere doesn’t there? You’d think.

"I’m telling you the truth right here nothing has happened."

Babcock is one of the most sought after coaches because he is ranked 17 with 501 victories with the most recent win being recorded last Saturday when Red Wings beat New York Rangers 3-2. The coach said he was quite impressed by the team's performance and told those who imagine that he is working hard because he is in his last year of the contract to think otherwise because he is simply addicted to victory.

“You are what you are and you find a way to win with what you have,” Babcock said. “That’s what you do. You do it each and every year and you reinvent yourself each and every year. That’s what this team has done. I’m very impressed with this team. Very impressed.”

“If you think I’m working harder this year because I’m in the last year of my contract it makes no difference,” he said. “I grind. That’s what I do. I’m a professional grinder. I love winning.”
