BMW will also include BMW i3 and BMW i8 at the Detroit auto show. BMW was very successful in its launch of the electric powered BMW i3 and the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. Due to this success the company has decided to expand its range of services focusing on every aspect of electric mobility and rolling them out internationally.
With these two models, BMW i is offering its customers not only a choice of electric vehicles but also far reaching complementary products in order for the cars to provide them a long term service. For example take ChargeNow which is a charging and payment service which enjoys a steady expansion.
The network of DC fast charging stations in the US is continuing to expand due to the introduction of the BMW i DC fast charger. This is the industry’s first wall-mounted DC fast charger. Plus the ParkNow web and app based service helps the BMW i drivers to find a space when they need one.
ParkNow offers car park and roadside parking spaces across North America and can even filter the results of searches according to price, distance and availability of services. Then there is the ‘second-life’ pilot projects in the US, China and Germany that allow lithium-ion batteries from BMW i vehicles to be used as stationary energy storage devices after their useful life on the road comes to an end. So the BMW I series look to make a huge impact at this year’s NAIAS.
Now when talking about the BMW i3 we are looking at a family car that is just less than four meters in length. The model is available in both an all-electric and a range extender version. The models efficient two-cylinder gasoline engine generates electricity to recharge the high-voltage battery while on the move.
The second model is the i8 which is a plug-in hybrid sports car that has set new standards for performance and design. The model comes with a 1.5 liter TwinPower Turbo three-cylindered gasoline unit. This model from the BMW i Series reaches from 0 to 60 mph in a shocking 4.2 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph.
BMW is also looking forward to expanding its lead as the world’s top provider of on-line based in-car services. The vehicles have a built in SIM card and the updating takes place through it. The system also updates regularly by itself.
