Phase 2 of MobileIron cloud security initiative is the Content Security Service (CSS) that protect enterprise data in its original storage.

MobileIron released the MobileIron Content Security Service (CSS) today, an initiative of the company to protect cloud data. MobileIron is the forerunner in EMM (Enterprise Mobility Management).  

The most tenacious data loss threat nowadays is the personal cloud. Employees usually use the personal cloud service for data storage of work documents and this is called as ‘Shadow IT’.

The MobileIron CSS is the primarily resolution to the ‘Shadow IT ‘problem and it provides both tight integration into EMM platform for protection of content on personal cloud services and document level security.

According to Charles Hazelton, Research Director at 451 Research of Enterprise Mobility, employees usually do not follow company protocol and make use of their apps for work purposes, involuntarily putting company information and at risk.

39 percent of employees working in the US apply consumer apps in business because of their familiarity in personal time. Therefore data needs to be stored no matter wherever it is stored. Security move to document level from the devices will ensure a low risk of data loss.

Conventional security solutions for content usually link the storage with security which poses a problem. The work documents need to be migrated to another storage source so the security policies can be imposed. However the process becomes increasingly complex as more sources need to be created for data storage and it becomes difficult to manage them.

MobileIron is the first content security service that allows security protocols to be administered at document level across multiple data storage sources. It separates the security controls from the data storage methods; therefore employees can use their own cloud services.

The migration of documents is not necessary anymore and data is secure in personal cloud storage. BYOD (Bring your own device) is now a significant way for enterprises to influence the continuing consumerization of IT for the advantage of employees. 

Phase 1 of the MobileIron initiative to strengthen mobile security was released in October 2014 and the phase 2 consists of the CSS, with five additional capabilities such as:

  • Encryption and Key management
  • DLP (Data Loss Prevention) Controls
  • Secure Sharing
  • Activity Trail
  • EMM Integration

Through CSS work document encryption is possible regardless of where they are stored and security policies can be implemented. Document expiration policies can be set and selective documents can be wiped on a device and functions such as uploading, edition and downloading of the said documents can also be controlled.

Authorized employees can easily share documents among themselves secured and encrypted by CSS. Activities are also trailed to determine when, where and who accessed particular documents. A consistent view of devices, groups and users is maintained by CSS. Moreover CSS integrates with iOS and Android to ensure security of devices.
