Pitch Perfect 2 Cruising to $64 Million Opening Weekend

The female-fueled sequel races past Mad Max: Fury Road, expecting to earn $41 million this weekend

“Pitch Perfect 2” is certainly doing a lot more than the expected.

Universal’s musical comedy film is set to gross $64 million in the opening weekend, easily beating the latest installment of Mad Max, which should end up somewhere around $41 million at North American box office this weekend.

Pitch Perfect 2, starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Brittany Snow, went on to make a whopping $27.8 million on Friday with $4.6 million coming of the evening showings on Thursday. The sequel which was made with a frugal $29 million is playing at 3,473 locations and will amass more than $64 million if it goes on the same pace.

Mad Max: Fury Road, which features Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in the lead roles, nabbed $3.7 million with Thursday night showings and earned $16.6 million on Friday. Initial projections suggest that film will put up $41 to $43 million till the end of the weekend. The film, which was made with a staggering $ 150 million budget, may haul $130 million worldwide this weekend.

Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max: Road are now holding first two spots in terms of top-grossing films of this weekend, which means this is the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron’s supremacy. The sequel of 2012’s Avenger ruled the box office for two weeks and crossed the astonishing $1 billion mark on Friday. Now, it has become the third Marvel movie to achieve this milestone after Avengers and Iron Man 3.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is the only 21st film of all-time to gross $1 billion worldwide and is also on the verge of toppling “Furious 7” to become the top-grossing films at domestic box office so far this year. The film has earned $333 million in North America and is expected to end anywhere from $38 to $39 million this weeked.
