Warner Bros. announced Monday that the British actress Katherine Waterston will star in the fantasy film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” alongside Eddie Redmayne.
The 35-year old actress will play the female lead role of Porpentina or just Tina, a witch, who works her magic in USA and who meets magizoologist Newt Scamander during his journey to find and document magical creatures exist in the world, according to Hollywood Reporter.
Warner Bros. Pictures president of creative department and worldwide production, Greg Silverman said. “Katherine Waterston is a rising star, who was a revelation in our film Inherent Vice, earning the praise of both critics and audiences. We are thrilled to have her back in the Warner Bros. family.”
Earlier this month, Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne has been confirmed for the role of Newt Scamander, the magizoologist and the lead character in the spinoff.
“I am so thrilled to be a part of it but I can’t say a single word beyond that,” the 33-year old actor told to a newspaper in an interview. “I’ve always loved the world and I feel thrilled to be invited into it.”
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” set roughly 70 year ago before Harry Potter saga starts. It is based on the Hogwarts textbook of the same name, which has been read by Harry Potter, Ron Wesley and the rest of the class and follows the adventures of its author, Newt Scamander, who used to travel the Wizarding World and writes about the beasts he encounters.
In reality, the book was published in 2001 under the fictitious name of Newt Scamander instead of actual author J.K. Rolling. In September 2013, it has been announced by both Warner Bros. and J.K. Rolling that a film will be made on the book.
“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the ‘Harry Potter’ series but an extension of the wizarding world.” Rolling explained.
The film will mark J.K. Rolling’s debut as a screenwriter and it will be directed by David Yates, who helmed the last four films of Harry Potter series.
