I feel extremely unaccomplished as a songwriter: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga received Contemporary Icon Award at the 46th annual induction ceremony of Songwriters Hall of Fame Thursday night. The 29-year old singer, who is mostly known for her chart-topping singles and outrageous outfits, talked about how she thinks herself as being a songwriter and how much she is passionate about the gig.

“I feel that I have a lot of work to do, as personally, I feel extremely unaccomplished as a song writer,” Lady Gaga said after accepting the award. “As my heroes have done some things I can only dream of, I feel very in my fancy as a writer, and I think you for just…at this point in my career, I’ve had some ups, I’ve had some downs, I’ve had some in-betweens – that you’ve chosen to honor me for the only thing I know I have, which is my heartbeat, which is that I write songs.”

Linda Perry, rock singer and songwriter, performed Lady Gaga’s 2009 hit single “Bad Romance” in her own version, before Tony Bennett presented her with Contemporary Icon Award. Lady Gaga called that experience “something of a childhood dream.”

“I was thinking while I was setting there, and my mom was handing me napkins… if they only knew how many bad songs I wrote before that good one.” Lady Gaga revealed, who is the singer as well as the writer of the Bad Romance.

Lady Gaga also thanked Perry and Tony Bennett for giving the award. “I’m so grateful because (Tony is) always looking out for me. And I’m very honored that he was here tonight to present this award to me. And I’m very honored that Linda Perry was here, and I consider them to be true and two huge influences in my life…I’m very grateful that I am here.”

Lady Gaga used to write songs for other singers while working at Interscope Records label. She wrote for artists like Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block and The Pussycat Dolls before singer Akon discovered her vocal abilities and signed her.

Other new inductees included Van Morrison, Toby Keith, Bobby Braddock, late Willie Dixon, Cyndi Lauper and Lind Perry. Contemporary Icon Award is the new category at Songwriters Hall of Fame and Lady Gaga is the first to be honored with this award.
