A total of 26 deformed dogs were competing for the title but it was the Pit Bull-Dutch Shepherd mix who was declared the winner at 27th World’s Ugliest Dog contest held in Northern California and took home the prize money of $1,500.
Quasi Modo, who was the runner up for the 2014 competition, maintained a sustainable lead throughout the online voting while dogs named Sweepee Rambo and Frodo won second and third prize respectively.
Quasi Modo is owned by a veterinarian Virginia Sayre and her husband Mike Carroll, residing in Loxahatchee, Florida who adopted her from an animal shelter many years ago.
“She is a very gentle soul, she loves everybody and everything. There’s nothing in the world that she would hurt and people, people are her best friends.” Sayre said.
Quasi comes from Latin word, meaning incomplete. The fictional character of Victor Hugo’s novel “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame” was also called Quasimodo. He also had a hunchback and was feared by everyone in the town. Dog Quasi Modo also sometimes leave people stunned and scared.
“My appearance can be a little unsettling to some (I have had grown men jump on the top of their cars to get away from me because they thought I was a hyena or Tasmanian devil) but once they get to know me I win them over with my bubbly personality.” Quasi Modo’s biography reads.
An 8-year old Chihuahua named “Precious” earned the “Spirit Award”, given to a contender who overcomes obstacles and serves the community despite having deficiencies. Precious is blind in one eye but helps his owner smelling low blood sugar levels.
