OpenDNS is not the first security firm acquired by Cisco in the last two years in a bid to improve the security business. Last year Cisco was a minority investor in OpenDNS as it invested about $35 million in the company to back it up last May.
Having made an early investment gave Cisco a few perk when it came to acquisition and provides an edge compared to other companies. The acquisition of OpenDNS is also the first purchase since Cisco saw a power exchange, as the Sales Executive Chuck Robbins is set to replace the CEO John Chambers in just a month.
The purpose of OpenDNS is to predict and block malware and other cyber threats through its intelligence system that other sort of firewalls and anti-virus systems are unable to detect. Cisco is widely known for its firewall securities, intruder detection and preventive systems.
In 2013 Cisco similarly acquired Sourcefire to improve its preventive systems for $2.7 billion. Similarly the firms ThreatGRID which detects malware was acquired by Cisco in 2014 and the security advice firm Neohapsis was acquired in 2015.
"As more people, processes, data and things become connected, opportunities for security breaches and malicious threats grow exponentially when away from secure enterprise networks," said Hilton Romanski, Cisco chief technology and strategy officer.
"OpenDNS has a strong team with deep security expertise and key technology that complements Cisco's security vision. Together, we will help customers protect their extended network wherever the user is and regardless of the device."
According to Cisco they will continue to come up with deals which allow them to improve their securities and other aspects in the security domain. Cisco is evolving towards high end routers and new products which allow cloud based security tools and switches.
For the expansion Cisco is probably going to acquire even more new and emerging security firms. The deal between Cisco and OpenDNS will be finalized by early 2016.
