The number of heroin users is slowly but steadily increasing in the United States. This is a health hazard and societal problem that must be handled.

Heroin abuse and death from an overdose of heroin are factors that have been on the increase in the United States. Once we analyze the trends, a better and clearer picture of the problem emerges.

Prevention is always better than cure. The statistics show that the practice is exponentially rising in the white population and especially among the females. More than 8000 people died two years back.

About half a million individuals are addicted to heroin currently. It is a crying shame. And alongside the increase in heroin usage there is a rise in deaths due to overdose. Two people in a hundred abusers may die due to taking a tad bit too much.

This of course points to the great dangers of experimenting with the lethal drug. The impurities in the drug supply ensure that something really bad is going into your system everytime you take a shot of heroin. The whole noughties were a decade of heroin abuse where the use of the drug kept on mounting.

Many painkillers contain the same stuff that is to be found in heroin. Since the dirtcheap heroin which is to be found openly being sold by peddlars on the street is far less costly, people turn to it as a means of refuge from pain. But the results are awful.

Then there is the paradox of people employing more than one drug when getting high. They often use cocaine, alcohol and marijuana alongside their heroin habit. And it is often the case that the deaths occur when a companion drug is taken along with heroin.

Those who take prescriptin painkillers are more likely to move on to heroin along with their legal medicine. The scourge of addiction seems to have taken on the nation by storm. The statistics speak for themselves.

The poverty-stricken male youth in inner cities too have a bad habit regarding heroin as their favorite drug of choice. Furthermore, those who used the drug intravenously were more likely to employ dirty disposed syringes and thus the risk of HIV was there.

These trends towards self-destruction have to be reversed somehow. Bush Senior did his best to fight the war on drugs (like his son Dubya tried to fight the war on terrorism). But both failed miserably at the task. It is hoped that future generations will know better and avoid chasing the waterfall that is heroin addiction.
