SpaceX founder Elon Musk is discussing the explosion of a Falcon 9 rocket on June 28. Today at noon Pacific Elon Musk informs press in phone call about the findings.

SpaceX is over due with releasing their preliminary conclusions about what caused the explosion of the Falcon 9 rocket. Three weeks after the failed mission of a Dragon spacecraft to the ISS Elon Musk is discussing the cause of the Falcon 9 explosion today.

Update: Elon Musk says failing Strut is cause of Falcon 9 explosion.

In a phone call with members of the press scheduled to begin at noon Pacific, Elon Musk will update with preliminary findings of the explosion. We expect the released details to be published on the SpaceX site. The current state of the investigation has been already published, albeit the last update is from the day of the disaster.

The failure of the CRS-7 mission is a critical moment in SpaceX history as it could have major implications on future missions. Right now Falcon 9 rocket launches are cancelled until further notice.

Elon Musk is up front with how big of a problem the explosion is. "Obviously, it's a huge blow to SpaceX," Elon Musk said on July 7 at the International Space Station Research and Development Conference in Boston. "We take these missions incredibly seriously."

Two weeks ago, Elon Musk said that the cause of the June 28 rocket explosion is still unknown even after several thousand engineering hours. The last thing he revealed was that the engineers parsing data with a hex editor to recover final milliseconds.

It is natural decision for SpaceX to first inform their key customers on what they found out about the incident. SpaceX needs NASA and their other customers to keep trusting the private space venture.

Elon Musk is the type of person who is not talking until he has something to say. The silence about this on his Twitter account means that SpaceX engineers are still heads down into the problem and have yet to find a conclusive answer. SpaceX needs a conclusive answer to continue with Falcon 9 missions. Without fixing the cause there is no way to risk another mission.
