OnePlus takes Reservations for OnePlus 2

The new OnePlus 2 smartphone will be unveiled tonight at 7pm PT in a virtual reality media event. Customers can already reserve the new OnePlus 2 now.

Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus is unveiling today the new OnePlus 2 smartphone. The company is going to host a virtual reality media event. Viewers can download the OnePlus 2 launch app and use a Cardboard VR gear to watch the event in 3D Stereo.

OnePlus has started to accept invites for the OnePlus 2. The company uses an invite system to gauge inventory needs.

OnePlus said in a recent blog post: "More hardware companies have died from having too much inventory than from having too few sales. We’re in this for the long run, and we firmly believe that the long-term health of our business is far more important than growth."

There will be 30 to 50 times more inventory at launch of the OnePlus 2 compared to the first OnePlus launch.

To obtain an invite people either have to know an existing OnePlus customer, take part in OnePlus promotions or put down their email address in a reservations list. OnePlus is sending out invites to people on the reservation list when there are unused invites available.

There are already over 191,000 registered in the reservation list here.

The OnePlus 2 smartphone already got leaked by the Chinese version of the FCC last week. The company has teased several aspects of the new high-end smartphone ahead of today's event.

The OnePlus 2 will have 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. With LPDDR4, users will see faster loading times, smoother gameplay, and never-before-seen energy saving features. LPDDR4 has twice the bandwidth performance as the LPDDR3 at the same power consumption profile.

The 4GB RAM will be used by the 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor powering the OnePlus 2. The Snapdragon 810 v2.1 has 8 cores supporting streaming 4K Ultra HD video, crisp and fast photos with one quick snap. The OnePlus 2 supports immersive 3D gaming with the Adreno 430 GPU.

OnePlus revealed that the OnePlus 2 has an advanced fingerprint sensor. OnePlus says it is going to be faster than Apple's TouchID.

The new OnePlus 2 smartphone will be priced under $450 said OnePlus CEO Pete Lau.

The OnePlus 2 event starts at 7pm PT. There is also a non-VR version of the media event available on the OnePlus site.
