A recent research reveals prostate cancer is actually five distinct diseases.
A new study on prostate cancer has been published in the journal EBioMedicine. According to the study prostate cancer has five different types. The different types are determined by different genetics.

The study suggests different treatments for the different types of prostate cancer as solution. The study also claims they can better predict prostate cancer progression. If the results hold up in clinical trials the findings could be innovative.
The results will provide better information on choosing different treatments. Doctors can determine the most effective treatment for individual patients. Men with aggressive forms of prostate cancer will get the most desirable treatment. The study could help in saving the lives of thousands of men.
In the study 482 prostate cancer tumors were reviewed. The tumors sample consisted of both benign and germline tumors from 259 men. Researchers found a difference of 100 genes between five types of prostate cancer.
The method of determining cancer through genes also proved to be more efficient than commonly used methods. Genes determine the cancer progression with more accuracy. Commonly used tests include PSA and Gleason score tests.
Beforehand only 6 genes were known to be involved in prostate cancer. The study identified 94 more genes linked to prostate cancer. The next step for the researchers is to confirm he results in large clinical trials.

The research was first carried out by Dr. Alastair Lamb,UK Cambridge Institute of Cancer. Further research into the small molecular process will give way to more treatments . Determining the behaviour of the diseases will shape the future of prostate cancer treatments.
