Together, Apple and BMW could create magic on a scale hitherto unknown. Tim Cook and several other senior execs from Apple toured the BMW factory. The results were inconclusive though. The i3 electric car is one of the topics under discussion between the two giants.
Apple is adamant on developing a car on its own. BMW is fearful that it might end up being a supplier to Apple. But some degree of progress got made on both fronts. Many BMW hot shots were ready to give away spare parts to Apple.
Apple execs are impressed with the array of tools and technical trinkets. The cooperative effort might resemble the early days of Apple. That was when Steve Jobs created the Macintish computer. But it is still on tentative grounds.
"Apple executives were impressed with the fact that we abandoned traditional approaches to car making and started afresh. It chimed with the way they do things too," a senior BMW source told Reuters.
After the visit by Apple, BMW execs underwent a reshuffle. Furthermore, the man responsible for the meeting departed from BMW. BMW’s “i” vehicles get made from featherweight carbon fibers. The designing is radical in its outlook.
Electric cars are the “in” technology nowadays. Every firm from Google to Tesla is involved in this wave of the future. BMW needs to shape up. Its vehicles have to keep up with the latest hybrid and electric cars.
This points towards the futuristic trends. BMW is also into self-driving vehicles like Google. Technology is moving at breakneck speed. Singularity is approaching us faster than usual.
The products of the times to come will evolve according to their own logic. And they will not be ugly objects. Beautiful design will be part of the equation. BMW would not divulge trade secrets to Apple though.
Yet two opposite worlds are meeting in the form of Apple and BMW. They have their strengths and their weaknesses. And once they are together their limits will vanish into thin air. Limits exist only in the mind.
In reality there are only plateaus. The automobile market needs a fillip. And what better partner to do the job than Apple Incorporated. The seamless experience of the high tech firm will rejuvenate the car business.
