A leak today says that the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium will sport a 5.5-inch 4K UltraHD display. This would be the first 4K Display smartphone.

Is Sony going to announce the world's first 4K Display smartphone at the IFA 2015? Earlier today we reported that specifications of three Xperia Z5 smartphones have leaked via a Facebook post from an unofficial Sony Georgia account.

The most intriguing of the three Xperia Z5 models is the Xperia Z5 Premium with a 5.5-inch 4K UltraHD (3840x2160p) display. If this leaked information is true than Sony will offer the world's first 4K Display smartphone at the IFA 2015.

There have been rumors in past month about smartphones with 4K displays. The ZTE Star 3 was rumored in June to have a 4K display, which did not turn out to be true.

In April reports surfaced that Sharp developed a 5.5-inch 4K UltraHD (3840x2160p) IGZO display for smartphones. Sharp exhibited the display at the Chinese CITE 2015 show according to Japanese Impress. The report said that the 808ppi display would go into mass production in 2016.

Now comes the mysterious part. The slide below and all related information can nowhere be found on Sharp's sites. There is no reference on Sharp's Japanese sites that the company has developed a 5.5-inch 4K display.

Sharp 4k Display 5.5-inch

If Sony is indeed unveiling an Xperia Z5 with a 4K display it must be Sharp's display. There is no other vendor that has announces such a display so far. The only one that comes close is a 6-inch AMOLED 4K display a company called Everdisplay unveiled early August.

So what happened to the 5.5-inch Sharp 4K display? Did Sony seize the moment and struck an exclusive deal with Sharp to bring the first 4K display smartphone to the market? Has Sharp been able to accelerate production to enter mass production now?

Sony might also introduce its X-Reality Pro technology on the Xperia Z5 Premium. X-Reaility Pro can upscale HD video to 4K resolution and is already featured in Sony Bravia TVs.

Unless there is a complete leak of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, we will have to wait until September 2, when Sony is set to host a media event revealing the Xperia Z5 smartphones.
