It seems that a reissuing of the 1975 NASA Graphics Standards Manual has finally come about. This is all thanks to a vigorous campaign begun on Kickstarter.

Due to an initiative started by President Richard Nixon, the 1975 NASA Graphics Standards Manual became common fare. The project was spearheaded by the NEA and Danne & Blackburn. At the beginning a major issue was the logo for NASA.

The stroke from the A’s was missing and that got in the way of a complete design. The things having to do with design and communication at NASA were dealt with in the next decade or so by Danne & Blackburn. 

First a logotype known as “The Worm” was instituted. Then a couple of months later, this was replaced by “The Meatball”. Danne & Blackburn were asked to reissue a copy of the 1975 NASA Graphics Standards Manual. And they responded in the affirmative.

Kickstarter is to support the printing efforts for the manual at present. The scanning of each page of the manual will be accomplished with finesse. And the ink used will be a CYMK + 5 pantone®spot colors sample.  

The manual will have triple types of pages. The original ring binder format will be employed. High resolution scans from the prototype will be reissued in the new manual. In the capacity of design experts all agree upon “The Worm” as the standard logo that ought to be implemented on each and every piece of equipment.

The goal of NASA is to explore space and push the envelope when it comes to space exploration. The symbol of this ought to be a burrowing worm. While “The Meatball” probably looks odd and out-of-place, “The Worm” is ideal and suits NASA to a T. NASA’s design philosophy shows rationality and simplicity as its core values.  

Never has a design been so full of excellence and glory. NASA chose “The Worm” for its beauty of purpose and grandeur of goodness. The disinterested aim of exploring space for the sake of exploring space is what NASA is all about.

The NASA logo, whether it is on the Space Shuttle or on a Rocket looks A-1 in its systematic symbiosis with the space agency. This effort was started by Kickstarter in order to revive old memories and serve the future by seeking inspiration from the past. It will come in handy although NASA is keeping aloof from the project.
