Entertainment Weekly featured the cast of the three shows featured in the Shondaland’s TGIT including a cover of the three leading ladies with Shonda Rhimes accompanying a discussion of the four women.
As September lurks closer, everyone is excited to see their favorite characters return to their TV screens. Shonda Rhimes has created her own array of impeccable shows over the years including Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and the most successful show of last year, How to Get Away with Murder. Grey’s will be seeing its twelfth season this fall whilst HTGAWM will be coming back with a second season. Scandal is going ever stronger with a returning fifth season.

Fans always want to know what’s coming up and go behind the scenes to get extra bits from their favorite stars. So it was an amazing moment when Shonda Rhimes, Viola Davis (HTGAWM), Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy) and Kerry Washington (Scandal) sat down to discuss different issues and topics over wine and cheese.
Ellen Pompeo discussed the exit of her co-actor and on-screen romance Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). She shared with the ladies the most sexiest kind of comment about Derek’s death. All of a sudden, Patrick [Dempsey] leaves, and it’s like, Oh my God, Meredith’s gonna die of Alzheimer’s!
The show couldn’t possibly go on ¬ without the man! It was a supposition that the main character couldn’t live without Derek. It was however shown that Meredith did move on with life for the sake of her children.
She is now accompanied by new friends and family. So the next season will be all about Meredith and her life without McDreamy. To give a hint of what’s to come. Ellen shot a cover for the magazine wearing a white doctor’s coat and a stethoscope with the signatory red heels.
What else? Nothing. That’s right. The actress wore nothing but the coat and heels. It reminds us of the first season which was playful and raw. Ellen’s cover opens up minds for new possibilities.
Talking on colorism which has also been a theme in HTGAWM, she said; “You have to come from Detroit or Atlanta to be black. If you have John Denver on your iPod and you come from Central Falls, Rhode Island, then: Eh, you trickle-down black woman.”
Davis is proving how much that might be true as Annalise Keating was in fact Anna May. She was the exception to break all the conventions. No matter what the obstacles, Annalise has not let her color or being a woman come in her way.
The cover featured the characters, the Keating five with Keating herself holding the trophy aka the murder weapon in Sam’s trial. The cover itself speaks volumes of Keating holding the fate of these five young people as their lives are woven around hers. She was swept away from the group then by her husband to celebrate her 50th birthday.
Kerry Washington talked about what it was like to have a female showrunner. She said that when she told Shonda that she was pregnant, she had jumped up and down in her trailer with excitement.
Kerry said she doesn’t know if any male showrunner would have done that. He would have in fact looked at it as a difficulty. After giving birth to daughter Isabelle, Washington will be returning to the show. The cover for Scandal featured her character with two other main characters which comprise of the love trio Olivia Pope (Kerry’s character), Millie and Fitz.

The final cover featured the three leading ladies, all smiles with the showrunner herself. Shonda also described why she had come up with the idea of Gladiators. She said while growing up, whenever she was faced with racism and other radical ideas, her parents fought for her. They were her gladiators. Today she is flanked by 33 as the 33 characters came together for a single shot for TGIT.
