Forbes’ list for the highest earning hip hop artists is issued and most of their earnings might not come from hip hop.
Forbes’ Hip-Hop Cash Kings 2015 list is like a contest perhaps. All the big kings of hip hop proving who got the big bucks. Although most of it might not come from actual hip hop, seeing that they have business ventures, ad campaigns and endorsements adds to their bank balance.
This year the list has been issued and the man who came out on top is, Sean Combs aka P. Diddy. Combs who is reported to be reverting back to his original “Puff Daddy” moniker topped the list.
The rapper earned a total of $60 million in the past year alone. Most of his earnings however are not from his musical ventures. He has an album aligned to release soon. His earnings from the past year however come from his robust business portfolio. That includes TV network Revolt, alkaline water brand Aquahydrate, clothing line Sean John and Ciroc vodka.
He took the lead on his former tier-Jay Z. Jay Z was listed as the second most earning hip hop artist. The artist grossed in a total of $56 million last year. The stroke of genius among those earnings was the sold out On The Run tour along with his wife Beyoncé. Other than the tour, his own business ventures including his entertainment company Roc Nation and Armand de Brignac champagne.
The surprise was the promotion of Drake from his fourth spot last year to third. The surprise came because most of his $39.5 million came from his music. His surprise album “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” helped make his name climb the highest on the list to date. The Canadian artist also grossed a million dollar per performance during his 50 performances last year. The rest was added in by his endorsements for Sprite and Nike.
Someone dropped on the list though. It’s Dr. Dre. Even with the hype that Straight Outta Compton and his new album are creating this year, last year only constituted $33 million of Dr. Dre’s earnings.
That is nothing compared to his stellar 2014's $620 million. The album this year and the movie will definitely see some major cash figures next year for the artist. Many might speculate that he will be on top of that list next year.
Rounding off the top 5 is none other than the ‘Happy’ man himself, Pharrell Williams. Pharrell earned a total of $32 million from his touring, music and his role as a judge on The Voice.
The artist also also cashed out from his Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream clothing lines. His earning might have seen decline from the big settlement he had to pay to Marvin Gaye’s family for losing the lawsuit for “Blurred Lines”’.
