The Tizen OS smartwatches have been unveiled at the IFA 2015 in Berlin beginning of September.
The Gear S2 is 11.4mm thin (Apple Watch is 10.5 mm thin). The Tizen smartwatch has a 1.2-inch circular OLED screen and 360 x 360 resolution (302 ppi). The watch is running on a 1-GHz dual core processor.
The Samsung Gear S2 has NFC technology which will enable mobile payments without the need for a wallet.
Samsung claims that the battery can last up to 2-3 days. Other features of the Gear S2 include 4GB storage, 512MB RAM, Wi-fi, Bluetooth 4.1, heart rate monitor, barometer, accelerometer, gyroscope and wireless charging.
The Gear S2 is definitely closer to the Apple Watch than most other new smartwatches. The round shape that is for some reason the big trend with Apple's competitors is a matter of taste. Samsung did a good job leveraging the round shape for the UI using the crown for navigation.
Samsung managed to get a first set of popular apps on Tizen OS. Samsung still has to proof that Tizen OS will stay around and become a popular platform for app developers.
Samsung will offer the Gear S2 with 3G connectivity which incorporates the first-ever e-SIM with voice capability. The Gear S2 network-connected model will launch later this fall and will be available at AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless. U.S. Cellular will carry the Bluetooth only version. Wireless providers will confirm specific models, colors, pricing and availability.
