Nobel Prize 2015: Medicine Nobel Prize Announcement is Imminent

It is Nobel Prize week again. Starting Monday, the Nobel Foundation announces the Nobel Prize winners of 2015.

The 2015 Medicine Nobel Prize goes to William C. Campbell, Satoshi Ōmura and Youyou Tu

The eyes are again on Sweden. Starting today, the Nobel Foundation is announcing the 2015 Nobel Laureates. The first Nobel Prize announcement is today at 11:30am CET. It is the Medicine Nobel Prize (or Physiology Nobel Prize).

The Medicine or Physiology Nobel Prize has been awarded to 207 scientists since 1901. The 2014 Medicine Nobel Prize was awarded to was divided, one half awarded to John O'Keefe, the other half jointly to May-Britt Moser and Edvard I. Moser "for their discoveries of cells that constitute a positioning system in the brain". There have been 105 Nobel Prizes in Medicine awarded to 207 laureates over the history of the most prestigious science award.

For the 2015 Medicine Nobel Prize the Nobel Foundation nominated 327 scientists. Among them are 57 researchers who are nominated the first time.

Thomson Reuters has released their Nobel Prize predictions again as they do since 2002. Reuters bases its Nobel Prize winner prediction on the citations of papers. The list of laureates for the 2015 Medicine Nobel Prize include Jeffrey I. Gordon, Kazutoshi Mori, Peter Walter, Alexander Y. Rudensky, Shimon Sakaguchi, M.D., Ph.D. and Ethan M. Shevach.

For the first time, Thomson Reuters held a people's choice poll. The most votes got Jeffrey I. Gordon. He is a Professor and Director of the Center of Genome Sciences and Systems Biology,Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis. He is nominated for demonstrating the relationship between the human gut micro-biome and physiology, metabolism, and nutrition.

If he will be a 2015 Nobel Prize winner will be announced today at 11:30am CET. The 50 members of the Nobel Assembly are voting now on the winner through a majority vote. Science buffs can watch the Noble Prize announcement live in the video player below.

The Medicine Nobel Prize 2015 will be announced by Urban Lendahl, Secretary of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine. He will make the announcement at the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, Nobels väg 1, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm.

PHYSIOLOGY OR MEDICINE - Monday 5 October, 11:30 a.m. at the earliest

PHYSICS - Tuesday 6 October, 11:45 a.m. at the earliest

CHEMISTRY - Wednesday 7 October, 11:45 a.m. at the earliest

PEACE - Friday 9 October, 11:00 a.m.

ECONOMIC SCIENCES - Monday 12 October, 1:00 p.m. at the earliest

LITERATURE - October 8, 13:00 a.m.

The Nobel Prize is awarded since 1901. the Nobel Prize has been honoring men and women from all corners of the globe for outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and for work in peace. In 1895 Alfred Nobel wrote his last will, leaving much of his wealth to the establishment of the Nobel Prize. Nobel is the inventor of dynamite and holder of 355 patents. He was born in 1833 and died 1896.
