This Watch has been on the Moon and is Up for Auction

Dave Scott’s Apollo 15 lunar surface-worn chronograph watch will be auctioned off.

Space geeks with deep pockets should take note. A watch that has been worn on the moon by an astronaut is on the auction block this month.

Of the about dozen men that have stepped foot on the Moon, all have worn the standard swiss-made Omega chronograph watches. Officially issued by NASA, they are acknowledged as government property, and many, including Dave Scott’s watch used during his first two moonwalks are housed in institutions.

Bulova on the Moon

Commander Scott’s Bulova Chronograph, which he has worn during his third and final moonwalk of the mission, is the only lunar surface watch in private hands.

The Bulova Wrist Chronograph, exhibits significant wear from exposure while on the Moon, and from splashdown and recovery.

“Among the decisions I made, the monitoring of time was perhaps most important,” Commander Dave Scott stated in a detailed five-page letter of authenticity confirming its background story and mission use.

With this in mind, Commander Dave Scott authorized the inclusion of a backup watch, in addition to his standard issued Omega Speedmaster. The secondary watch, a Bulova Chronograph, served as a vital alternate incase the Omega failed. Final approval of personal items was relegated to the mission commander, an experienced pilot, who had flown in space twice before, on Gemini 8 and Apollo 9.

Colonel David R. Scott—Gemini 8 Pilot, Apollo 9 CMP, Apollo 15 CDR—amassed a combined 546 hours in space, was the seventh man to walk on the Moon and the first astronaut to operate the Lunar Rover on the Moon’s surface.

The starting bid for the Bulova watch that has been on the moon is $50,000. The moon tested watch is certainly not as stylish and functional as the new Apple Watch Hermes. It is also much more expensive, but damn it. It was on the bloody moon.

The Space and Aviation Autograph and Artifact Auction by RR Auction will run from October 15 through October 22.

Online bidding for the Dave Scott’s Apollo 15 Lunar Surface Chronograph will be available until 6:00 pm ET on October 22. At 7:00 pm ET, the live auction of this lot will begin in the Boston Gallery. Only phone bids or in-person bids will be accepted during the live auction. More details can be found on the RR Auction site.
