The ice floes in the Antarctic Continent are melting at a breakneck speed due to global warming. If this trend continues indefinitely, within less than a century the results will not be pretty.

By 2050, the ice sheets in Antarctica will have started melting in scads. And if mankind is not on his best behavior, the whole of the ice-covered continent will have gone the way of the wind by 2100.

This is a terribly frightening scenario since it has grave consequences for the ecosystem of the earth. According to a new study, the Antarctic ice is undergoing a seismic change as far as higher temperatures and meltdowns are concerned.

The collapse of the environment in the territory can be seen in the form of ice sheets melting off and floating into the surrounding waters. The increased sea levels around the world is a dire result of this scheme of things. It could cause floods and tsunamis in its wake.

By the middle of this century alone, the rate of meltdown will have doubled. And towards the end, that is 75 years from now, the whole system will probably undergo a mass change that will leave the earth’s waterways taxed beyond relief.

The checks and balances provided by Mother Nature will automatically be removed and mankind will then have to face the music. What is there to prevent the ice sheets from melting away and releasing their copious water reserves into the oceans.

Catastrophe awaits mankind unless the matter is cleared up via stringent guidelines and restrictions. Scientists are giving out warning signals already regarding the SNAFU. The rapid meltdown will be due to global warming which is becoming all too common a feature of the postmodern world.

Within the past generation or so, the Antarctic Continent has faced massive changes. The gradual melting of the ice floes and solid frozen reserves is like an ecological nervous breakdown of sorts.

The global psychosis we are facing is obvious from the instability of the ice sheets in the Antarctic. Satellite pics have shown this to be a very tangible reality and not the stuff of wishy washy thinking.

But a crisis is also an opportunity. And mankind may yet redeem itself by changing its errant ways. The result will be a cleaner environment of blue skies and greenery not to mention a more stable global milieu that is not subject to the random shocks of the weather.

The study published in the journal Nature Geoscience.
