Miitomo is First Nintendo Smartphone App coming 2016

Nintendo games are not coming to Smartphones this Holiday season. Mario is also nowhere in sight.

Nintendo delays the launch of its first smartphone game to March of 2016. The first Nintendo smartphone app is called Miitomo. Miitomo allows uses to create a Mii character like on the gaming console. The Mii is then asking the user a set of questions and communicates the user's answers with their Friends' Mii. They already lost me. Must be a Japan only thing.

Miitomo only works with friends whom the user has registered as "Friends." Tatsumi Kimishima, president of Nintendo tries to explain Miitomo like this:

"We are designing this communication application to enable Friends to share information comfortably and securely. In this way, instead of the users proactively sending their own messages, Miitomo has a unique characteristic that can be called “friendly communication starters” as your Mii will automatically dispatch the answers you gave to certain questions to your friends. These “friendly communication starters” have an advantage that even the people who are less willing to send messages can easily participate."

Ok. Miitomo is indeed designed only for the Japanese market. See screenshots of Miitomo in this gallery.

Nintendo says that they still plan to release 5 titles for smartphones by the end of March 2017. The delay of the first Nintendo smartphone game to March 2016 is already a disappointment for Nintendo fans. The bigger disappointment though is that the first Nintendo iPhone and Android phone title is not a game. It also does not feature any characters with the most appeal like Mario and Zelda.

A year ago I had very high hopes after Nintendo announced the smartphone platform extension. So far I am not impressed.

The delay of the first Nintendo smartphone app is likely caused by the development of My Nintendo. The company realized that they need a unified account for users that is a bridge between dedicated game systems and smart devices. My Nintendo will also launch in March of 2016.
