A mysterious sinkhole has opened up in Meridian, Mississippi, swallowing up 15 vehicles on Saturday night. The sudden incident happened at the parking lot of the new IHOP restaurant located on Frontage Road, Median.
People living so close to the area reported they heard series of booms and loud noises, after which the electricity power cut, and the sinkhole opened up, swallowing cars parked within the lot.
City officials said the sinkhole is about 50 feet wide and runs all the way from the IHOP restaurant to Sowashee Creek, about 600 feet away.
City officials were notified of the incident and arrived to the scene about 7:15 pm on Saturday evening, and they reported that at least 15 vehicles disappeared into the sinkhole.
Wayne Cook, Meridian Battalion Chief disclosed that investigators would start work on Sunday, and that no lives was lost nor any person injured in the unfortunate incident.
The factors that caused the sinkhole are not known at the moment, but it might not be unconnected with the 3 inches of rain that fell over the weekend, and then almost 10 inches fell within the past two weeks.

Located at 220 North Frontage Road, the IHOP restaurant opened earlier this week, and it is plain luck that the sinkhole did not open just underneath it to swallow it up – an incident that would have cost several lives.
