Johann Jungwirth will handle Volkswagen’s all-new Digitalization Strategy Department.
On Tuesday Volkswagen announced it has hired an ex Apple and Mercedes veteran. The executive named Johann Jungwirth will head the VW Digitalization Strategy Department. Jungwirth was an electrical engineer.

Jungwirth remained the head of Mercedes-Benz's research and development center in Silicon Valley. Jungwirth then transferred to the Apple Special Projects Group. Jungwirth worked with Apple for 15 months before being appointed by Volkswagen.
According to Volkswagen Jungwirth’s appointment is Volkswagen’s way of reinforcing its position in digitalization. Digitalization is a very important future field for Volkswagen. Details about Jungwirth’s specific work focus at VW are still not clear.
However Jungwirth’s arrival comes at a time when Volkswagen could desperately use some innovation. The future of Volkswagen may lie in moving beyond the traditional methods of transportation.
At Mercedes Jungwirth researched autonomous driving, electric powertrains and infotainment system design. At Apple Jungwirth was named the director of ‘Mac Systems Engineering’. Rumor has it Jungwirth was most probably involved in the project Titan.
Since Jungwirth’s specialties from Mercedes would work perfectly in the position of self-driving. In October VW announced they will electrify the all-new Phaeton flagship sedan.

VW also promised to unveil both plug-in hybrids and pure battery-electric vehicles. The move could be better for Volkswagen so it can move forward in the direction of vehicles without gasoline and diesel.
