The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 2 has Lowest Franchise Opening

The final instalment of the Hunger Games franchise earned only $16 million on its Thursday night opening showings in the US.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 2 was released in the US on Thursday the 20th of November. The film only earned $16 million in its opening screenings in cinemas. The earnings while substantial for a new release are the lowest opening earnings in the franchise. When compare to the previous three films from the Hunger Games franchise the earnings are the lowest.

The first film ‘Hunger Games’ earned $19.7 million from midnight shows. The first film was released in the US during Match 2012. The second film ‘Catching Fire’ reeled in $25.2 million from Thursday night screenings. Even ‘Mockingjay — Part 1’ had an opening of $17 million.

However if the total worldwide earning of the opening show are considered the numbers are promising. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 had an opening of $43 million worldwide. The final Hunger Games installment has already placed at No.1 spot in 66 world markets out of 68.

The film will be released in other big markets such as China and Mexico on Friday. The film Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 2 is still the largest global launch of 2015. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 2 is also the Lionsgate studio’s biggest release to date.

It is predicted the Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 will earn between $120 million to $125 million in North America. North America has 4,175 theatres where the film will be screened. According to Variety, Mockingjay-Part 2 will most likely become the fourth-biggest domestic opening of 2015. 

It is the final time Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth will reprise their roles. Other cast members include Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson and Julianne Moore.
