The British sports car brand will now focus on making a car to rival the 540C and 570S.
McLaren will no longer work on car to rival the Porsche Cayman. The news was confirmed by the McLaren’s chief designer Robert Melville. According to Melville they won't chase volume sales.
The team at McLarens don’t want to make a car below the new 540C and 570S. The British sports car brand has ruled out making a more affordable model. McLarens has no intention of going below its 911-rivalling 540C and 570S.
The new entry-level models are a bet by McLaren to attract a larger audience. However McLaren still wants to retain an element of high-end appeal with the new model.
Melville further shared a Porsche Cayman rival is a step too far for McLaren. The idea is not exclusive enough for McLaren. The McLaren 570S was designed for those who wanted to use a sports car every day.
The 570S gives the British brand a whole different type of customer range. The 570S will be bought by more cautious owners looking to use it more often. Previously the P1 and the 650S by McLaren were only bought by wealthy owners.

McLaren will now have a more measured approach reported AutoCar. The new model will rival the likes of 911 and Audi R8. The new model may be a convertible version of the 570S. The third model could also be a model with grand tourer-style bodywork. The 570S Spider is expected to be launched in 2017.
