The XPrize Foundation has offered a $7 million reward for the best ocean floor mapping tech.

The XPrize Foundation is a non-profit enterprise that funds tech companies that know how to get the job done. It has recently offered a $7 million reward for competitors.

The best tech that maps the ocean floor will grab the prize money. The ultimate objective is the development of affordable and efficient technologies for scanning the oceanic depths. The venture was named the Ocean Discovery XPrize. And it was staged in synch with the NOAA.

The competition wants to award the prize money to those heroes of economic life and engineers who can come up with something better. And it is accessible to the general public.

If anyone can come up with the best oceanographic mapping method, then he or she deserves the reward. The ultimate goal is to rise above the current sonar technology.

The solution must consist of a high resolution bathymetric map. Specific objects must be pinpointed in the map. The problem is that access to the ocean floor has been hindered by various obstacles up until now.

The extreme conditions, high price which must be paid, scarce tech inventions and few investments point out the hindrances along the way. The erstwhile rewards set up by XPrize were for oceanic hygiene and health.

But this time it is going to be different. The care of the ocean is a lofty goal of oceanography. Also exploration of the ocean may lead to progress in other areas.

A sea sponge recently was used to make a drug for HIV patients. Many oceanographers agree that mankind has mapped the surface of Mars but the ocean floor pretty much remains a mystery. In fact, 95% of the ocean floor hasn’t been mapped and this is a shame.

One of the main issues is the expensive nature of the job. Thus cost-effective methods must be explored for the future. The contest does have several rules and regulations.

Nine months are required for the registration process. A year is required for the preliminary development. And a year and a half is required for testing purposes.

A $4 million grand prize not to mention a $1 million second prize will be given away too. Other smaller prizes exist in the scheme of things. The full name of the competition is the Shell Ocean Discovery XPrize. That is because Shell is the sponsor of the competition.
