Elon Musk's SpaceX did it. They landed a rocket after delivering satellites into orbit, to re-use it.

Last night at 8:29pm ET, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket with 11 satellites into orbit. After deploying the payload, the Falcon 9 rocket returned to earth to land vertically. It is the first time in history a rocket landed after delivering its payload in space.

It is an incredible engineering accomplishment. The celebration that broke out after the landing at SpaceX is saying all. SpaceX engineers were screaming, jumping and hugging - an then entering into shouting USA, USA, USA!

The video below shows the final moment on of the Falcon 9 touching down as seen from a close by helicopter.

Elon Musk blurted out a background post explaining in detail what just happened and how difficult it is to control the enormous kinetic power. The rocket landing today will not go back in space. Elon Musk says it will be kept as a blueprint for the next Falcon 9 missions.

You can re-watch the whole SpaceX ORBCOMM-2 mission in the 45 minute video below. The video is a perfect promotional video for SpaceX. Apparently SpaceX is a great place to work and everybody is very passionate at what they do.
