The largest blue star sapphire that costs around 112 million pounds has been found in a mine in Sri Lanka. It weighs 1404.49 carats.

Already the price in dollars has been fixed at $100 million and at the auctioneer’s it may as well fetch as much as $175 million. The proud owner of this gemstone says that he wants to remain unknown despite the fame he could garner from this precious possession.

The very moment he set eyes on this large sapphire, he decided to buy it. Upon being presented with the sapphire, he took a risk by buying it on impulse but it was definitely worth it.

"The moment I saw it, I decided to buy," the current owner told BBC. "When the stone was brought to me I suspected that it might be the world's largest blue star sapphire. So I took a risk and bought it."

This blue sapphire is a beauty to gaze at in admiration. And it was discovered in Ratnapura. Ratnapura is a city in Sri Lanka and it is known as the City of Gems. The blue sapphire that was unearthed has been named The Star of Adam.

A gemology institute in Colombo has declared that the gem weighs 1404.49 carats. This cannot be doubted. The institute also gave the verdict that no larger a gemstone in this category has ever been unearthed before.

Sri Lanka’s gemstone industry is a lucrative trade to be engaged in. It rakes in $103 million on an annual basis. The blue star sapphire is called that because it has a star-like groove in its middle. The previous record for a sapphire was one that weighed 1395 carats. That too was a big one.

The title “The Star of Adam” which has been given to this blue star sapphire by its owner was due to the Islamic belief that Adam came down to earth in Sri Lanka after expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

Adam is even said to have lived after his descent on the peak of a mountain which is nowadays called Adam’s Peak. The current owner of the sapphire has gone on record to say that it not just a gemstone but virtually an exhibition in itself.

Another sapphire that was a part of the engagement ring of Kate Middleton was once also worn by Lady Diana. Such is the allure and charm of these gems which look like the cerulean blue eyes of a baby in their beauty and innocence.
