The 15th season of American Idol and its last had a star studded premiere with some interesting auditions and memorable moments.
American Idol started off as a concept of creating decent singers that could give more to the American music industry. That concept soon caught full drift as the show in its initial years found amazing singers among its contestants and superstars in their winners. Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Fantasia, David Archuleta, Adam Lambert, Scotty McCreery…these names became the idols of the American nation. Families all across America became a part of their success stories as these singers embarked on a brighter future.

Over the years the show saw instability as the original judges including the legendary Simon Cowell known for his criticism, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson left the show one by one and the show struggled for a while to find its groove again. Sure there were still great singers in America coming to audition and sure the show produced some great singers along the way as well but the show came on the brink of being cancelled more than a few times.
Fox network had to do some serious searching to establish a good panel including Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith lead Steve Tyler among the judges. After both the men left and JLo remained, the panel started to shape around her, offering more diversity in Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban.
The network agreed that as the show was in a good place to end at a high note and so Fox announced that this year, American Idol will see its 15th and final season. The network announced that the auditions will start in January, 2016 and judges will visit different states and pick who they feel to be deserving singers to go to Hollywood.
This premiere, the last ever premiere of the last ever season of American Idol (Unless they decide to reboot it in a few years), was full of fun moments and surprises. The Twitter account of the American Idol page and #IdolPremiere captured all the special moments of the start of this final journey.
The network announced that the premiere would air on Fox on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 8-10PM ET/PT followed by a second episode on Thursday, January 7th also running two hours at 8-10PM ET/PT. This schedule will start to shift right away though.
The premiere hit the TV screens on Wednesday and it was one hell of a show to watch. The judges got to travel to Atlanta, Georgia and Denver, Colorado to search out the talent, and shenanigans along with it.
This time around there were filters that managed to keep the completely tone deaf or extremely self-confident hopefuls out of the judges hair and we are talking about former contestants on the show including second season winner Ruben Studdard, Taylor Hicks, Lee DeWyze, Kris Allen and Clay Aiken; who manned audition registration desk. How did these boys look after so many years?
We got to know that Hicks still plays the harmonica (too much), Allen and DeWyze are still extremely hot and Clay Aiken has now turned into a full-time sasspants. Good times. What were these guys doing here? Their job was to judge the weirdoes and the tonedeafs. The judges were facilitated by not sending in someone whom they’d have a hard time telling to try next time because there won’t be a next time.
The first contestant was as old as the show itself, 15 years old, Michelle Marie and she was a huge Idol fan. Her mother had videos of Marie crying over eliminations and Marie was able to recount the names of the winners in correct chronological order. Marie sand LeAnne Rhimes ‘Blue’ which earned her a ticket to Hollywood. After Marie, Josiah Siska, 17, introduced himself as a golf course maintenance guy. He sang Johnny Cash’s “Ghost Riders” in his crazy, gorgeous, deep singing voice.
The judges tested him out when they requested that he demonstrate how low he can go. He did the song again in in a chromatic scale which was an impressive shows of his understanding of music. Followed by Josiah was Lindita, 26, lost 150 pounds before auditioning for the show. She was currently a physical trainer and she sang a beautiful rendition of the song “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by James Brown and held the note so long that Keith had to check his watch.
There were some truly inspirational stories like Lee Jean’s. A 15 year old from South Carolina recounted that he had lost his beloved brother in an accident, but it inspired him to pursue his dream of being a musician. He played the guitar and sang a soulful cover of “I See Fire” by Ed Sheeran. JLo just wanted to squeeze him cause he was too cute but cuteness had nothing to do with the golden ticket he got. Another weirdly successful contestant was Jeneve Mitchell, 15, who lives “off the grid” on a ranch with no power in Colorado.
According to her, her family turns on a generator twice a week so they can watch the show. She sang a “Chainsaw” by The Band Perry, and wowed the judges with her funky performance and ended up with her own golden ticket. Sonika Vaid, 20, from Martha’s Vineyard in MA lived her American dream singing Carrie Underwood’s “Look at Me”. The judges loved it and called it a perfect performance. She Facetimed her dad to tell him she was going to Hollywood.
The funniest contestant had to be Reanna Molinaro, 23, who is a badass police officer from New Mexico. She works 12+ hour days, chasing bad guys and all that good stuff, as she makes her way in a masculine field as a female police officer. Harry and Keith tweaked at their own fun when they started acting out a bit and pretend to get in a fight.
Reanna joined in the fun when she handcuffed Harry while Keith held him down. Harry then tried to play the piano while his hands were behind his back, and actually kind of succeeded at what he then called the “handcuff blues”. Apart from the hilarity, Reanna did a great job at singing “Leavin’ On Your Mind” by Patsy Cline, and she got 3 yeses.
Just when everyone thought that it was all over and nothing more could walk through those doors…a contestant claiming that no one believed that he could rap made his way to audition in front of the judges. Keeping a very straight face, he sang a short a capella rap of “Gold Digger”. JLo loved it. Who might the contestant be though? None other than GQ’s Most Stylish Man of The Year himself, Kanye West. Kanye seemed excited at getting his ticket to Hollywood and it was the most fun thing ever to watch.
That’s not all, the Twitter feed of the show featured some great behind the scenes shots including Ryan Seacrest holding up a camera, JLo sprawled on the judges table with the caption “Werk”, Keith and Harry trying out their instruments with caption; “Loved this moment from the #IdolPremiere!” and Kanye holding up his golden ticket to Hollywood.
So far the Idol Premiere was great and really has fans looking forward to a fun filled and over the edge entertainment through the entire show. Kanye’s appearance also implies that he will be a presence on the show as well.
