It has been found out that mothers-to-be who consumed fish on a regular basis have smarter and more intelligent children. Fish is probably the ideal brain food.
Pregnant moms who ate fish thrice a week gave birth to babies who later on had better-than-average brain health. Two novel studies have proved this beyond a shadow of doubt.

Researchers in Spain followed almost 2000 mother-infant pairs from the moment of inception till the point where the kids were five years old. What they found out was that the moms who ate fish, such as tuna, salmon and sardines, three times a week were more likely to give birth to neurologically stronger and healthier infants.
As for the moms who shunned or avoided fish in their diets, their babies didn’t have the level of intelligence or psychological hardiness that the fish-loving moms’ kids had.
“Seafood is known to be an important source of essential nutrients for brain development, but at the same time accumulates mercury from the environment, which is known to be neurotoxic,” lead author Jordi Julvez, of the Center for Research in Environmental Epidemiology in Barcelona told Reuters.
Japanese experts carried out another study. Pregnant rodents were fed a diet rich in omega-6 but poor in omega-3. This is the norm in human diets throughout the global village.
Omega-6 is found in seed oils while omega-3 is present in fish. The two cannot be synthesized by the body and have to be ingested via one’s daily diet.
The diets that contained low amounts of omega-3 fatty acids caused the rat infants to develop smaller brains and also show abnormal behavior later on in their lives.
Since a brain is fully integrated on a biological level before birth, it needs an adequate diet to function on an optimal basis for the rest of its existence. Any deficiencies in nutrition will affect it direly. The other organs of the body are not as sensitive in this regard as the brain.
A diet that is equally balanced with regard to omega-6 and omega-3 is important. But the Standard American Diet (SAD) is in favor of omega-6 as opposed to omega-3 by as much as a 16:1 lopsided ratio. This is extremely unhealthy.
The main concern is any chances of mercury poisoning due to the consumption of fish. This is kept in mind by the FDA which recommends 8 to 12 ounces of fish a week for pregnant women.
The European Food Safety Authority recommends from 5 to 21 ounces of fish per week instead. Seafood is the most vital ingredient in brain health. The only caveat is the presence of mercury in fish tissue. But the fact of the matter is that those ladies who consumed 21 ounces of fish showed no negative consequences.

The American women who are expecting ought to learn something from their European counterparts and consume more fish. Their newborn babies will thank them later when they become aware, mature and responsible adults.
