The images show the Z5 as being heavily camouflaged. But the prototype has the typical proportions and short overhangs of a BMW roadster.
The dimensions of the new Z5 seem to be larger than the current BMW Z4. The BMW Z5 also features a soft top compared to the hard cover found on the Z4.
Klaus Frohlich, BMW head of R&D confirmed at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show a replacement of Z4 will come. Frohlich also confirmed the replacement of Z4 will be developed together with Toyota.
Since then BMW and Toyota have been tight-lipped about details. The partnership between BMW and Toyota will last until 2020 and they will work on 3 new sport cars.
BMWBlog sources claim the replacement of the Z4 will have a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The Z5 which was caught testing will most likely be unveiled by 2018.
Fans have been waiting for years for the Z4 to be replaced. If the car caught testing is the replacement of the Z4 then it looks promising. The car was caught testing in some extreme cold and snow.
Although the car is slightly bigger than the Z4, it does not look overly large. If rumors are true then the Z5 will have a strong emphasis on lightweight materials.
