  • More Cases of Female Genital Mutilation occur than Reported by Previous Estimates

More cases of female genital mutilation occur than have been reported up until now by previous estimates. So says a UN study that proves that the backward and brutal practice is still extant in many regions of the world.

Over 200 million girls and women face the unfair and vicious practice of female genital mutilation on a global level. This is way above previous estimates.

Thus stress should be placed on putting an end to this obscurantist action which demeans women and treats them like second class citizens.

Although much headway had been made in the eradication of female genital mutilation, it is still the usual practice in many underdeveloped societies.

It is essentially an alarming human rights violation like the earlier Hindu practice of widows immolating themselves on the dead husband’s funeral pyre.

If current standards are anything to go by, the future looks dismal. Over the next decade and a half, the number of females who will be facing this ordeal will multiply beyond anyone’s imagination.

And then it will be hard to stem the tide. The UN has resolved to end this practice on the International Day for Zero Tolerance of FGM (Female Genital Mutilation).

According to Reuters, over 30 nations are on the black list of UNICEF as regards this nefarious practice. But the nucleus is a trio of countries: Egypt, Ethiopia and Indonesia. The current trends show 70 million more females undergoing the painful and harrowing experience than was estimated two years ago.

Maybe this might be due to the inclusion of Indonesia which was excluded before the present day and time. FGM also poses the problem of being a serious health hazard.

Many times the blades used to cut the female genitalia are septic and cause bacterial infections which further increase chances of complications in the women.

It is a gross injustice and a travesty of the rights of womankind. And the quicker this sick institution is uprooted from society, the better it would be for the female members.

The sort of physical and psychic wounds such a malpractice leaves behind in the form of bodily and mental scars are one too many to even begin to list.

It is basically an ancient ritual that began in enclaves of Africa, the Middle East and Asia. In some of the cases, the vagina is also sewn together.

Various reasons are cited as the rationale behind this senseless savagery. One is the standard byword of the patriarchal control of female sexuality.

In fact, it is a wicked form of sadism carried out against females. The sooner such inhumanity is deleted from the repertoire of the species, the more salubrious it will be for half the human race.
