The all-new HUV (Hybrid Utility Vehicle) will be the first low emissions vehicle in the Kia eco-car platform.
Kia just announced it will unveil a new HUV at the incoming Chicago Auto show. The new HUV is a low emissions vehicle called Niro. The Niro is a hybrid crossover and will join Kia’s growing electrified line-up.

The Niro is also Kia first dedicated hybrid on its new eco-car platform. The Niro has a 106-inch wheelbase, so its size is in between the Sportage and Sorento. The Niro will also be the latest addition in Kia’s EcoDynamics line joining the Soul EV and Optima Hybrid.
The Niro has a parallel hybrid powertrain equipped with a Kappa 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder engine. The Niro also boast a second-generation six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).
The electric motor comes with a lithium-ion battery a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Niro will be able to produce 146 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. According to Kia the Niro will be able to achieve a projected fuel-consumption rating of 50 miles per gallon.
The Niro is a lightweight vehicle. For this purpose the engineers at Kia used aluminum for the hood, tailgate and several suspension elements. Suspension elements such as control arms, front and rear knuckles, and brake calipers.

The use of aluminum was able to bring down the overall weight of the vehicle. The lithium-ion polymer battery was also used to reduce the weight of the Niro. The Niro is designed to contain specific environmentally-conscious technologies.
