Optima is the first ever Plug-in Hybrid by Kia and will join its line-up of eco-friendly vehicles.
The all-new 2017 Optima Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) was unveiled by Kia Motors at the Chicago Auto Show. It is the first PHEV by Kia and will join Kia’s line-up of eco-friendly vehicles.

The two other fuel-efficient additions are the 2017 Niro (HUV) and all-new 2017 Optima Hybrid (HEV). All three of the Kia vehicles are being introduced under the Kia Motors EcoDynamics.
EcoDynamics is Kia’s environmentally friendly sub-brand. The Kia Optima PHEV contains a host of new technologies and features. The Optima has a more powerful hybrid engine along with a robust telematics system.
The exterior design of the 2017 Optima has also been enhanced. The 2017 Optima will go for sale at the end of the year. Price of the 2017 Optima will be announced prior to its sale.
The 2017 Optima PHEV will only come in one trim called the EX. The Optima will be manufactured at the Hwasung, South Korea facility. The Optima is part of Kia’s initiative to increase fuel efficiency by 25 percent by 2020.
The Optima has a 2.0-liter "Nu" four-cylinder GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The power output of the 2017 Optima stands at 154 horsepower with 6000 rpm.
The electric power source is a transmission-mounted 50 kW motor. The 2017 Optima motor is 42 percent more powerful than its predecessor.

According to Kia the 2017 Optima can rapidly and seamlessly transition from EV to gasoline to hybrid modes. The 2017 Optima enhancements provide an engine efficiency improvement of more than 20 percent.
