After a report that there were some delays in production, Star Wars: Episode VIII has officially started casting.

Disney and Lucasfilm announced today - with a video - that the next Episode will fall right after the last movie stopped and they unveiled new cast additions: Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro, who has been rumored to play the villain in the next installment, and Laura Dern.

Dern is a bit of a surprise addition to the cast, and there really isn't a hint as to what side she will play. Since Episode VIII goes into the question of Rey's family, it is likely that Dern will play her mother.

Dern and Del Toro will be joined by a fairly unknown actress Kelly Marie Tran, a UCLA grad and veteran improve actress. She has had a very colorful career already, having worked for years in some small roles on shows like About a Boy and makes appearances in CollegeHumor YouTube videos.

Her role hasn't been specified, but she is a welcome addition to the cast because she adds some diversity. Since a new director has been announced, the universe has been getting some much needed diversity and changing storylines.

Episode VII will come from Looper and Brick filmmaker Rian Johnson and will once again be produced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Johnson's longtime friend Ram Bergman.

Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger said last week that principal photography has started and the studio announcement Monday said that filming has started.

The studio announcement offers some insight:

“Rey took her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will continue her epic journey with Finn, Poe, and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the continuing Star Wars saga, Star Wars: Episode VIII, which began principal photography at Pinewood Studios in London on Feb. 15, 2016.”

A lot of the cast from the last movie will return, including: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Maz Kanata, Lupita Nyong'o, and Domhnall Gleeson.

Episode VIII will be executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski, and there will also be some new additions as well: cinematographer Steve Yedlin, editor Bob Ducsay, production designer Rick Heinrichs, hair and make-up designer Peter Swords King, and casting director Mary Vernieu.

The returning crew members are co-producer and VP post production Pippa Anderson, creature and droid FX creative supervisor Neal Scanlan, costume designer Michael Kaplan, prop master Jamie Wilkinson, SFX supervisor Chris Corbould, stunt coordinator Rob Inch, VFX supervisor Ben Morris, and U.K. casting director Nina Gold.

The next installment is set for release in December 2017, but there is another stand-alone picture debuting in December 2016 as well.
