Microsoft has its incredible HoloLens augmented reality solution in the works, but what is the company's answer to the Sony PlayStation VR headset?
Sony PS4 owners will get Virtual Reality this year with the PlayStation VR headset. Sony's VR headset will launch late in the Fall. What is the Xbox One virtual reality solution?
There is a certain closeness between Facebook's Oculus and Microsoft. The Oculus ships with an Xbox One controller and runs only on Windows PCs. Microsoft announced last summer that Xbox One owners can stream Xbox One games to their PCs and then play them with the Oculus Rift.
There is though no direct Xbox One Rift support in the works according to Nate Mitchell, the vice president of product at Oculus. He told Polygon in September of 2015: "It has been a conversation, but I can say we're not so close." Plans can have changed since then and they should.
An Xbox One Oculus Rift is not just great for Microsoft but also Oculus. The $1,000 Windows 10 PC requirement is a major barrier for adoption of the Oculus Rift. Besides the cost, I am for instance not motivated to get a Windows PC again and bring it into my Mac household.
Given the fierce battle between Microsoft and Sony for console market share, Microsoft needs to counter the PlayStation VR this fall with something. An Oculus Rift for Xbox One is likely unless Microsoft has developed secretly a fully immersive HoloLens.
