The latest evidence is just in and according to it alcohol is best avoided altogether since even moderate drinking may not be that good for you.
There are many who still think that a glass of wine with dinner will promote longevity and a healthy life. This may not necessarily be the case. The science behind the health benefits of alcohol in moderation is virtually non-existent.

The findings were published in the March 2016 issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs. Lowered heart disease and a long life were two of the supposed benefits of drinking two glasses of wine a day.
The new study looked at those earlier surveys and found inconsistencies in them. They were full of holes and showed benefits where there were none whatsoever.
Those who are teetotalers and didn’t drink a single glass of wine or beer a day were studied. The comparison is between abstainers and those who drink two glasses of alcohol a day.
The only problem was that the group of abstainers included those with other health issues. So obviously those who were abstainers were in poor health and hence had cut out all alcohol from their daily regimen.
Therefore the group of moderate drinkers were being compared to those who were worse off than them despite being teetotalers. When these biases and differences were rectified by the researchers, the longevity signs of moderate drinkers vanished into thin air.
There were simply no health benefits of moderate drinking. Only occasional drinkers – those who drank just a single glass of wine a day – lived the longest.
Furthermore, it couldn’t just be the alcohol which was causing their longevity. They simply lived healthier lives in general. The dose of alcohol they were consuming was minimal and thus probably had no effect on their longevity.
The previous studies even showed moderate drinking to be linked to lower risks of deafness and liver cirrhosis. It seems the researchers had made alcohol out to be some sort of cure-all.
Moderate drinking is a marker of other processes. Some say that red wine lends a long life on those who consume it regularly. The contents of alcohol cannot alone be responsible for such drastic changes as a lengthy life.

The general opinion of imbibing wine with meals being a sign of good health may not be so. Alcohol is a poison for the liver and it is processed by the body in such a way that its effects are generally harmful for the mind as well.
