The Audi A4 crossover is the first right-hand-drive model to feature Audi’s latest system. The system has been described as a major engineering overhaul. It is part of Audi’s new philosophy of using ‘predictive’ technology to reduce fuel consumption.
The system will be featured alongside the Audi 248bhp 2.0 TFSI engine and all new models with the engine will have the system. The sales of the A4 will start in April and the cars will be delivered by June 2016.
The new system is based on the original quattro system that uses longitudinally mounted engines. The system revision includes a new electronic clutch to the rear of the gearbox.
The addition allows drive to the rear wheels to be disengaged in fractions of a second. Similarly a second electronic clutch is fitted to the rear differential, reported AutoCar.
The clutch allows the rear wheels to spin freely when disengaged lowering drag and fuel consumption. According to Audi the new new quattro Ultra transmission will save an average of about 4mpg. The system will also make the Audi A4 4kg lighter.
