The Tesla Model 3 delivered on design. Elon Musk just shared how the Tesla design team got there.
Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk unveiled the Tesla Model 3 on March 31. Over 115,000 people have ordered the Model 3 without having seen it including myself. Now Tesla Motors counts over 253,000 Model 3 reservations. I have not been a big fan of the Model S design. The Model X is a bit more appealing, but the Model 3 is hitting my taste spot on.

It is futuristic enough and very sporty. It is hands-down the coolest mid-sized Sedan that will hit the road. 47-year-old Franz von Holzhausen is the Chief Designer at Tesla Motors since 2008. He designed the Model S, but the Model 3 is clearly his master piece. Elon Musk is seemingly proud of the design and shared on Sunday design sketches of the Model 3 on social media (see below).
Franz von Holzhausen is an American with German roots. He started his career after studying at the ArtCenter College of Design in California, he started out his career at German Volkswagen. Before going to Tesla in 2008, he was Director of Design at Mazda North America.
In an interview with German Wired Magazine, von Holzhausen said about the Model 3 design that it is not super-crazy because Tesla wants to build a brand that is growing over decades and reaches the mass market and not just early adopters. He wanted to create a timeless design that people like.
The Model 3 starts at $35,000 and will be like all Tesla cars fast. The base model will hit 0 to 60mph in under 6 seconds. The range is at a minimum 215 miles. Tesla's engineers are working to increase that until the Model 3 goes into production in early 2017. Elon Musk said after the huge reservation numbers that the company has to revise production plans.
