  • Chinese Researchers Help Eliminate Zika Virus By Revealing Its NS1 Protein Structure

A group of Chinese researchers have found out more about the Zika Virus protein makeup.

Experts in China have got the protein structure of the Zika Virus figured out. It was a backbreaking task but finally, they seem to have managed to accomplish the impossible.

The discovery of the structure of the NS1 protein will lead to further research into the Zika Virus pandemic. This may end in a cure for the devastating disease. The possibility of a future vaccine against the disease which is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito will than have become a reality.

The protein NS1 is to be found in other viruses of the flavivirus genus. It has two functions. Firstly, it can help flush out the virus from the human body. Secondly, it can easily serve as a source of target practice for vaccines which can help locate the virus in the first place.

Associate research fellow from the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shi Yi, said, "First, it [Zika virus NS1 protein] can help eliminate the virus from human body. Second, it can be used as a target for vaccines to locate the virus, because some antibodies will be generated by its stimulation resulting in some autoimmune diseases."

Some of the antibodies in the body will be produced by applying a stimulus to the stuff so that autoimmunity in case of diseases is developed. Not only has the structure of the virus protein been determined at a molecular level but the way it reacts with the recipient throughout the duration of the infection is of key importance.

Although such research can lead to a preventative effect on the Zika Virus, more efforts need to be done in the long run. It will take more than a band-aid approach to solve this latest illness that has brought the global village to its knees as far as health and happiness are concerned. The NS1 protein will serve as a locator of the virus.

"The main objective of our research is to inform people that there is a Zika virus NS1 protein that can be used as an important virus locator in the future. We can use the NS1 protein to develop vaccines and provide relevant diagnosis."

Over 30 nations have come under the rubric of those lands where the Zika Virus has spread chaos. The disease wreaks havoc in the form of microcephaly in case of babies born to mothers who carry the infection. Also it causes among other things, muscular weakness.
