In February we reported about a flexible smartphone developed by researchers in Canada. The ReFlex based on flexible OLED technology has just been trumped by a bendable smartphone using a graphene screen in China.

A video of the extremely flexible graphene smartphone is making its rounds in Chinese media. The video was recorded at the Nanping International Conventional Center in Chongqing last week. It shows the bendable smartphone in action. It is fully touch enabled and can be bent around the wrist.

Update May 25: The Moxi Group announced to release the bendable graphene phone in 2016.

The first flexible graphene displays have been shown by research labs starting in 2014. Samsung announced back then that the future wearable devices lies in Graphene. Graphene screens are extremely thin and are seen as the future for wearable devices. China is on the forefront of graphene research. The details about this particular bendable graphene smartphone are scarce. In 2015 Chongqing based Moxi Technology and Galapad introduced the first smartphone with a graphene screen. It could be that the company is behind this bendable graphene smartphone.

Chinese news service Xinhua News has released a new video of the flexible graphene smartphone that has english commentary. The new details revealed in the video include that the screen is mainly made from graphene. So there is another material involved. The bendable graphene phone has a weight of 200g. There is still no information about the company behind the graphene smartphone and what the plans are to bring a graphene phone to the market.

Chinese technology companies are ramping up fast. The drone market for instance is dominated by Chinese companies. China could leapfrog Apple and Samsung also in the smartphone sector with innovations like this.
