Will Ferrell backs out of playing Reagan in the new comedy that was criticized by the Reagan family for insensitivity to the late President’s disease.

In the past two months, the 48 year old Comic Genius was presented with a script to play Late President Ronald Reagan. The script garnered a lot of attention from the actors and even got the like of James Brolin, John Cho and Lena Dunham to come and do a reading this March. Will looked set to produce and act in the movie.

That was not before Will was met with a severe backlash from the surviving Reagan family. Patti Davis, President’s daughter called the script insensitive. She at one point said that the script was cruel and Will Ferrell was ‘heartless’ to be portraying her father in such a light.

Keep in mind that Reagan’s dementia and Alzheimer’s were highlighted in the script a lot to the funnier side. Some of the scenes included Reagan confusing his wardrobe manager Libby with Libya which led him to utter, "I want Libby gone’ leading to bombing of Libya and at another point a low-level aid convincing a disgruntled President that he is an actor in a movie playing the President."

Patti Davis and Michael Reagan, both protested against the fun making side of Reagan’s Alzheimer’s saying that there were thousands of people in America that suffered from the disease and they still got a lot of mail that asked them how they coped with the disease in the family.

Both of them also pointed out that Alzheimer’s was like a thief that robbed the person and their family of memories, thoughts and gnaws at their lives slowly and brutally. Davis also wrote a letter to Ferrell in which she accused him.

After all this, Will Ferrell has announced that he will not be doing the movie. His rep said that Ferrell had a change of heart which made him decide against doing the movie. His decision was applauded by Davis, Reagan and also the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

“The ‘Reagan’ script is one of a number of scripts that had been submitted to Will Ferrell which he had considered. While it is by no means an ‘Alzheimer’s comedy’ as has been suggested, Mr. Ferrell is not pursuing this project,” Ferrell's rep told PageSix.

“I am so relieved that Will has decided against this film. I can’t imagine that anybody else would sign onto it,” Davis said.

“I’ve been deluged with letters and personal stories from people who are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, and those who have just been diagnosed themselves. It really showed how widespread this disease is and how it just devastates families. It is beyond the pale that anyone would make it a comedy about it.”
