The majority of North American avian species are currently finding it hard to survive. Nearly a third of them are in grave danger.

It is a shocking report. Over a third of North American birds are at a huge risk of becoming extinct. The wildlife preservation authorities have gone head over heels in an effort to stem the tide of this dismal news.

Especially, the marine birds and tropical avians are engaged in a virtual struggle for their existence. The study was unique and took a gander at the bird populations of Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Over 37% of the 1,154 species required emergency steps by wildlife conservationists to be brought back into the mainstream of life. The governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States formed an organization that looks into the matter way back in 1999.

Upto half the total list of birds are on the red alert roster, reported Reuters. Their numbers are dwindling fast. Also their environmental niches are being destroyed by the encroachments of human beings.

Especially marine birds face the gravest dangers. Among the list of destructive agents were rodents, felines, fisheries, pollution and global warming.

Among the steps that are being taken are wiping out the vermin that causes these birds to disappear as well as providing them with conservation sanctuaries.

Also any plastic parts that float in the oceans and cause these birds to choke on them are being gathered and put to better uses. The decline in offshore birds has raised alarm bells in the hearts of the conservationists.

The rise in sea levels, coastal civilization, human garbage and oil spills have wreaked havoc with the seabirds’ habitats.

Some of these birds that inhabit the triple nation group are migratory in nature. It is a race against time that is going on to preserve the biodiversity of these avian species.

Their lives are intertwined with that of other species in the region including man. If mankind does not stop the harm being done to the unfortunate birds, it is setting itself up to inhabit a poorer version of the global village.

The environment like the grasslands, beaches and various other regions hold a cornucopia of birds that make life a beautiful and scenic affair. Without these birds all the activity in the region would die down and mankind will be left bereft of a balanced ecosystem.
