Patricia Espinosa is now formally in charge of the United Nations climate convention. The Mexican diplomat will take the place of the retiring Christiana Figueres.

Mexico is proud of Patricia Espinosa who is now the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC. The United Nations confirmed the news. She is currently the Mexican ambassador to Germany.

She will be replacing Christiana Figueres who will leave her position vacant in July after six years of managing the convention. The Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon chose Espinosa for the position about 30 days ago.

Currently, his choice has received the stamp of approval of the UNFCCC. The appointment will go into action shortly. Espinosa spoke of how she was honored and delighted to be given the role.

She said that she felt great humility in being handed such a great responsibility. Espinosa expatiated on how she would try to tackle this issue facing humankind today with all the resources at her disposal.

The goal was a sustainable and economically viable world which had responsible citizens in it who avoided excessive pollution and wasteful usage of non-renewable resources.

Our planet’s climate is at stake. Espinosa explained the facts of the matter which boiled down to working in tandem with world governments to face the challenges of the future.

The Paris Summit served as a beacon of hope for a bewildered humanity in the general atmosphere of insecurity and global warming. The real thing to do was to put an end to carbon emissions and make the environment the #1 priority.

Steps had to be taken on a practical level instead of on a theoretical basis. It is action and not words alone that will do the job in the final analysis.

Before she was ambassador to Germany, Espinosa was the ambassador to Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia. She has also headed the Climate Change Summit which took place in Cancun in 2010.

This was the crucial conference that set the wheels in motion for the Paris Summit to be held years later. Now it is Espinosa’s job to see to it that the Paris Summit guidelines are followed by the national leaders that signed the agreement document. Her experience as a diplomat will come in handy for future talks and negotiations regarding climate change with other delegates from around the world.
