There are five major personality characteristics that determine sex frequency in newlyweds.

Wives possess two personality traits that predict the number of times they will be having sex with their husbands per week. The new study was based on the Big Five personality traits that determine a lot of things, sex frequency being one of them.

These are:

  1. openness to experience,
  2. conscientiousness,
  3. extroversion,
  4. agreeableness and
  5. neuroticism.

Wives who were more agreeable and open to experience tended to have more sex after their weddings, according to PsyPost

Three studies of newlyweds were carried out. 278 couples who were newlyweds were included in the studies. They first underwent psychological tests to determine their personality types and traits.

Then they recorded their sexual activity rate in a diary they kept for a fortnight. The couples had been married for a month and a half. These couples had sex three to four times per fortnight.

The husbands’ personality traits had nothing whatsoever to do with the frequency of sex. Wives, especially those who had the trait of openness, tended to go for sex more frequently with their hubbies.

While agreeableness leads to trust, helpful behavior and compassion, openness leads to a curious disposition and the tendency to try new experiences.

No previous research has been done on the matter. What came as somewhat of a surprise was that the husband’s personality traits had no effect on the frequency of sex between the newlyweds.

The womens’ personality traits were the deciding factor in the “nookie between the sheets” equation. While men are more likely to give the go-ahead signal for sexual activity, females are the ones who are responsible for allowing the act to take place and flourish in the context of the bedroom.

There were also links between personality traits and sexual satisfaction. If both husband and wife were low in levels of neuroticism, they tended to be more sexually satisfied with each other.

The less they faced any stress and anxiety, the more they tended to truly enjoy the experience of sex. Also hubbies low in openness were more likely to be satisfied with their wives.

This too comes as a shocker. Psychology is indeed the last science. It will continue to yield new facts and figures regarding human nature as the times roll on.

The findings of this study got published in the Journal of Research in Personality.
